Real Christians Have Something to Say

In a world of triviality, uncertainty, superficiality and difficulties – the world that most of us encounter and participate in on a daily basis – is there anything of substance? I mean real substance Something that has the potential to resonate deep within the heart of people – real people.

I think there is – but I also think it’s rare.

By and large, “Christianity” in the UK is a farce. It’s shallow, superficial, trivial and full of uncertainty. It’s no different to the world that we encounter, and consequently it has nothing to say. But – there are some voices calling in the wilderness. There are some streams of water in a dry and thirsty land. In other words, there are still some real Christians out there, who have found something of the reality of Christianity, and they are not afraid to share something of that with others.

Earlier today I was scrolling through my Social media newsfeed, and I ‘liked’ a status update. The very next update from another friend caught my attention too. So did the one that followed. I then noticed something else – they were all similar in their own way. They were updates filled with hope. Messages from real folk who have found something real to share with others.

The first update was from a young guy whose life was once in a total mess. He once was heavily involved with the gang and drug culture until Jesus broke into his life. Since then he has planted a church and is a pastor in Easterhouse. His update was simple – he quoted the words old an old hymn.

 My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand.

Why is a former gang member/druggie quoting an old hymn? Quite simply, the words of the hymn are they very essence of what changed his life. The hope that is found in Jesus alone.

The second update was from another young guy who was also once caught up in the drug scene. He is now training for ministry at Mattersy Hall. Jesus turned his life around a number of years ago – here is what he posted today.

Those who are walking around today with shame and guilt and hating themselves, I just want to encourage use that you don’t have to feel that way..don’t let your past drag you down..you are perfect in his sight… have a great weekend.

What’s he saying? Quite simply, if we can see how God sees us in Christ – our lives will be radically altered. Those who are in Christ are loved with a perfect love. God the Father is for us, and is never, never against His children.

The third update was from a retired Presbyterian minister. A down-to-earth guy who just loves the Lord and loves people. Here is what he said,

 We need someone other than our personal resolution – we need the grace that is in Christ, and we need fresh supply, as we say by-the-hour, and even more, by the moment. Jesus is our present Help.

Again – he is highlighting the source of real hope.

This post is a bit different to my usual posts. But I thought the three updates were significant. Christians often feel like a fish out of water in society, but the reality is they are carrying an endless supply of water in a land of drought.

Many folk are too caught up with the trinket and toys of this world to even hear the voices of hope that God has placed around them. Others are blinded by false arguments that keep them locked into their unbelief. But, for those who will hear – there are real people, with real hope who are able to help others discover the hope, peace and purpose which is found in Christ alone.
