So, hand raising in worship? Is it calvinistic or charismatic? Presbyterian or Pentecostal? Contemporary indulgence or ancient tradition?
I was encouraged to read the following statement by calvin in his Institutes, this morning.
“The ceremony of lifting up our hands in prayer is designed to remind us that we are far removed from God, unless our thoughts rise upward: as it is said in the psalm, “Unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul,” (Psa 25: 1).”
There you have it — Calvin the closet charismatic!
Joking aside, if carried out with the right motivation and intention — the practice of lifting hands during worship and prayer can help us focus our minds and hearts Godward. More importantly, it is scriptural —
“So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands.” (Psalm 63:4)
